First Ever Cape-Wide Catholic Schools Week Draws 1,000
The first ever Cape-Wide Catholic Schools Week Mass drew over 1,000 participants to South Yarmouth’s St. Pius X Church on Tuesday, January 29, 2008. The Mass was held in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, a national week of recognition and celebration of Catholic schools for their contributions to their communities and the nation. The 2008 theme was “Catholic Schools: Lighting the Way.”
In addition to numerous friends of Catholic education, students and faculty from Holy Trinity School in West Harwich, St. Margaret Regional School in Buzzards Bay, St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School in Hyannis, St. Pius X School in South Yarmouth, and Pope John Paul II High School in Hyannis attended this significant event.
During his homily, Diocese of Fall River Bishop George W. Coleman held the rapt attention of attendees as he used the gospel reading to compare the Cape area Catholic School students to disciples being trained mentally, physically, and socially to be the very best they can be and, equally important, to deliver the gospel message to the world around them.
There was universal praise of the event. Individuals interviewed expressed a strong desire that this Catholic Schools Week assemblage of Cape area Catholic schools become an annual occurrence.
